I toook a shot on the OVER in the Quintana fight last night when it hit 6.5u-160. And again ESPN sticks it in my ass as this bum doesnt answer the bell for RD 7 for no apparent reason.
Quiters in Boxing and Shady ESPN Decisions and endings are pretty much the norm these days. I wonder what meds they have Teddy Atlas on to keep him hush. Must be alotta $$$$$$. :sad3:
I had the under, so obviously I didn't have a problem with the stoppage.
However, I did have a problem with the matchmaking that lead to a short night.
The reason this fight was a mismatch (and the only reason I played the under) is b/c of Quintana's huge size advantage over Campos.
Quintana has fought at 147 for the last 7 years and he's a big welterweight
Campos weighed in at 132 for a fight early last year. He's 33 years old, his frame hasn't grown for 10 years, its not like he outgrew the weight class. I could see him stepping up to 140, but 147 was way to much.
The 15 lbs of natural weight difference was obvious from the start, and it became a huge factor as the fight progressed. IMO Quintana was starting to beat the sh*t out of Campos in the 6th round, and it would've gotten much worse if Campos continued.
It may not have looked like Campos was taking a beating, he was still slipping some punches and throwing back. However, the extreme size advantage had to make it feel worse for Campos than it looked.
I usually wouldn't defend a fighter quiting, but Campos shouldn't have been there in the 1st place and was in danger of getting seriously hurt. The matchmaking in this fight was just as dangerous as Gatti gaining 18 pounds in 24 hrs prior to ending the career of Gamache.
I know Campos and his poeple agreed to the fight, but ESPN or the Cali state boxing commision, or someone should have made the right decision for them.
Speaking of the right decisions, someone has to stop Hearns and Bowe from ever fighting again, before its too late.
Btw, a simple solution to Gatti and Cotto gaining 15 pounds after the weigh-in would be to have another weigh-in a few hours before the fight. If a fighter weighs more than the next weightclass limit, see ya. Gatti and Cotto would have to weigh 147 or less. If they can't do that, they shouln't be fighting at 140 anyway.
